Nokia announces first Windows Phone 'Lumia' devices in London

Nokia World - the company’s biggest public-facing event, which takes place in London today and tomorrow - has been opened this morning by CEO and president Stephen Elop.

Products revealed at the event include the ‘Asha’ range of devices, which combine smartphone-like design with Nokia’s S40 feature phone platform. The first four Nokia Asha phones are the 200, 201, 300 and 303.

The Nokia Lumia 800 (which was apparently codenamed ‘SeaRay’ and bears more than a passing resemblance to the Nokia N9) is focussed on social networking and online experiences, while the Nokia Lumia 710 is described as a ‘no-nonsense’ smartphone. Both will have 1.4GHz processors. SIM-free price for the Nokia Lumia 800 will be approximately 420 Euro excluding tax.

Stephen Elop said “Eight months ago, we shared our new strategy and today we are demonstrating clear progress of this strategy in action. We’re driving innovation throughout our entire portfolio, from new smartphone experiences to ever smarter mobile phones. From the Nokia Lumia 800 to the Nokia Asha 201, we are bringing compelling new products to the market faster than ever before. I’m incredibly proud of these new devices - and the people of Nokia who have made this happen.”

Also revealed were two Nokia Purity headsets that have been produced as part of a new partnership with audio specialists Monster.

The Nokia Lumia 800 is expected to appear in the UK next month.
