IT business Oracle has agreed to acquire Tekelec, a US-based business that specialises in helping communications networks manage their data. Tekelec’s technology is currently used by more than 300 service providers in over 100 countries.

Oracle says it plans to combine Tekelec’s services with those from Acme Packet, another recent acquisition.

If I’m paying for internet access - whether the arrangement is with a broadband service provider for my home or a mobile network operator on my smartphone - I want to be able to use that access however I want. That’s pretty much what net neutrality is all about.

Today’s mobile phone customers want more and more mobile data, which is stretching network capacity. In addition, many of those consumers would rather not be committed to a limit; they’d rather have a mobile internet tariff that is (or appears to be) unlimited. This puts even more pressure on mobile networks.
