The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic caused global smartphone production to drop 11% year-on-year in 2020, reaching 1.25 billion units, according to figures from market research company TrendForce.

Xiaomi was one of the world's top three smartphone producers in the third quarter of this year; the first time it's ever reached that position. The figures come from technology analyst company Canalys, which puts Huawei in second place and Samsung in the lead.
