Text, email and ‘chatspeak’ doesn’t affect children’s spelling
Research from the University of Alberta has revealed that the abbreviated language used by many youngsters in instant messaging and SMS messages has no effect on their spelling abilities. In fact, the study’s author – Dr Connie Varnhagen - says using the language variations from instant messaging and texting is a good sign. It contrasts with a UK study published earlier this month where youngsters said they thought text shortcuts damaged the quality of their spelling. [University of Alberta]
