The emotional side effects of using a mobile phone

Mobile phone comparison website www.rightmobilephone.co.uk has published the results of a survey that asked over 3000 people in Britain how their mobile phone usage affected their emotions.

First, the good stuff. Of all the people who used their mobile phone to wake them with their favourite song, 71% said they started the day happier than they would otherwise. 78% of people tell somebody they love them on the phone every day and 82% of us look forward to hearing from loved ones throughout the day.

Now the disappointment. 41% said a day without a text message made them feel unpopular and lonely, with 80% of people feeling down when they didn’t receive a reply to a text message. 19% of people deliberately avoided calls from their parents – and we each have an average 50 people in our mobile’s phonebook that we’ve not called since adding their details.

Finally, 61% of people said they regularly used ‘LOL’ as an acronym when sending SMS text messages… yet only 9% of people said they’d ever laughed out loud at anything they’d been sent by text. [Press release via SourceWire]
