Three UK changes its adult content filter from opt-out to opt-in

Three.co.ukThree UK is changing the way it blocks age-sensitive content accessed via its mobile network.

Previously it’s followed a similar policy to the UK’s other major networks, filtering websites to protect users who may be under 18. Commercial web content that would be classified as ‘18+’ in other formats (e.g. magazines, films and games) has been restricted until the customer provides proof they’re at least 18 years old. This has caused frustration among some customers on ‘pay monthly’ contracts because they’ve already confirmed their age as part of the connection process.

In a blog entry, the network acknowledges that its filter has sometimes restricted more than just the adult content sites it was designed to block. As a result - and following customer feedback - it’s decided to remove the filter for all its post-pay contract customers. People who want to reinstate the internet filter can arrange this by sending a text message.

Pay As You Go customers will still need to prove their age before having the content filter removed.

Three UK says all Pay Monthly customers will have the filter removed by the end of June and will have this confirmed with a message on their monthly bill.

It's never been opt-out. The only way I can bypass it is to use a VPN or change the APN from three.co.uk to 3internet but this causes wider issues with connectivity when moving between 3G and 2G.
