Two iPhone quirks hit the headlines: data usage and unstoppable messages

The Apple iPhone has been in the news this week following a couple of reports that detailed unexpected behaviour from the device.

Customers have been warned about generating unexpectedly high bills after it was reported that a data control option within the phone’s settings isn’t explained particularly clearly. The ‘Automatic Downloads’ setting lets customers choose whether or not they want music, apps and books to be downloaded across multiple Apple devices. Below this, a control marked ‘Use mobile data’ can be set on or off. However, this doesn’t control whether mobile data is used when downloading software for the first time.

Initially described as a “flaw that could cost you thousands”, news stories were later updated to reflect that the issue was caused by the wording being unclear.

Meanwhile, some customers using Apple’s iMessage service have found that they can’t stop messages from being delivered to their phone after it’s been stolen. Even remotely erasing the iPhone and transferring the mobile phone number to a new device hasn’t worked.

Similar problems have been reported when using a SIM card to activate or demonstrate new iPhones, with iMessages sent to the SIM’s owner being received across all the devices that were activated using the card.
