The Ubuntu Edge, a high-spec flagship smartphone from Canonical that was attempting to raise $32 million (£20.5 million) via crowd-funding site Indiegogo, has failed to achieve its target. In total, over $12.8 million was pledged by almost 20,000 people around the world. Their money is now being refunded.

However, the Ubuntu Edge still beat previous records for the amount committed to a crowd-funded project

In a statement on Indiegogo.com, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth and the Ubuntu Edge team said “The big winner from this campaign is Ubuntu. While we passionately wanted to build the Edge to showcase Ubuntu on phones, the support and attention it received will still be a huge boost as other Ubuntu phones start to arrive in 2014. Thousands of you clearly want to own an Ubuntu phone and believe in our vision of convergence, and rest assured you won’t have much longer to wait.”
