A nationwide trial has launched that’ll see the emergency services responding to SMS text messages as well as 999 telephone calls. The scheme is designed to help people who can’t make conventional phone calls.
People who’ve registered for the trial simply compose a text message on their mobile phone and send it to 999. They’ll receive a reply confirming that the message has been received and may also be contacted for additional information.
Users can register online or by text; full details are online at www.emergencySMS.org.uk and via Ofcom's web site.
