Combined shipments of Ultra Mobile PCs, netbooks, Mobile Internet Devices and other similarly-equipped mobile consumer electronics devices are expected to reach 385 million units in 2014, according to ABI Research. Together they comprise the slightly vague category of Ultra Mobile Devices (UMDs). The company says the pocket-sized MID segment is particularly interesting – it includes the Nokia N900, now due for a slightly-delayed release in November – but says this segment will probably end up disappearing as MIDs are given mobile phone capabilities and become smartphones. We should also expect more ‘premium netbooks’ and a continued differentiation based on aesthetics and build quality rather than features.
