BlackBerry has demonstrated a new ‘over the air’ service that would allow car and commercial vehicle manufacturers to update vehicle software remotely. The machine-to-machine (M2M) ‘Software Update Management for Automotive’ service takes advantage of the secure infrastructure that delivers software updates to BlackBerry devices.
David J Smith, Executive Vice President for Enterprise Mobile Computing at BlackBerry, said “BlackBerry is helping facilitate a rapid convergence between mobile computing and the auto industry as automakers seek to connect with customers wherever they may be. BlackBerry’s Software Update Management for Automotive service can transform the vehicle experience by enabling automakers to deliver new, compelling capabilities to their customers, long after the initial sale.”
BlackBerry’s OTA service would let vehicle manufacturers deliver software updates to electronic control units and add new applications to entertainment systems. More details are expected in the next few months.
