More funding and London office for browser company Skyfire

Mobile web browser business Skyfire Labs has raised $8 million in its latest round of funding. Current investors Matrix Partners, Trinity Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners have been joined by Verizon Communications subsidiary Verizon Investments LLC.

Skyfire says it’ll use the funds to meet the demands of wireless operator customers and also to expand into Europe and Asia.

Alongside the funding announcement, Skyfire has named John Rintoul as vice president of sales for Skyfire’s newly-opened EMEA office in London.

Andrew Verhalen, general partner at Matrix Partners, said “Wireless operators around the world are facing an explosion in mobile data on their networks, driven largely by mobile video. Skyfire is well positioned with solutions for operators that can expand network capacity by over 25 percent, as well as generate incremental revenue.”

Skyfire apps for Apple iOS and Google Android devices have been downloaded by over 12 million users.
