Nielsen research says almost half of US mobile consumers now have smartphones

The latest research from Nielsen shows that 46% of all US mobile consumers had smartphones in the final quarter of 2011, with 60% of purchasers in that period choosing a smartphone.

Most smartphone users are choosing Android-based devices, although the launch of the Apple iPhone 4S boosted iOS sales towards the end of the period.

44.5% of buyers in December chose an iPhone, compared to 25.1% in October. However, a significant number of purchasers aren’t choosing the latest device: 57% of new iPhone owners surveyed in December said they chose an iPhone 4S.

Overall for the three-month period from October to December 2011, 46.3% of smartphone owners said they had an Android mobile phone while 30% had Apple iOS and 14.9% had BlackBerry devices. 4.6% were using Windows Mobile.
