Mobile entertainment will be worth £42 billion by 2016

Juniper Research has published a report that shows growth from games and infotainment applications, helped by the increasing number of tablet devices, will help mobile entertainment revenue increase to more than $65 billion (£42 billion) annually by 2016. In comparison, last year’s total was $36 billion.

Dr Windsor Holden, who wrote the report, said “For applications such as streamed TV, multiplayer gaming or casino gambling, tablets offer a richer, more immersive experience than smartphones. This is already translating into markedly higher usage - and consumer spend - on selected apps within these areas.”

However, while overall entertainment revenues are expected to increase steadily, not every sector will do well. The music sector has seen growth in streaming subscriptions and full-track downloads being adversely affected by the decline in ringtones. By 2016, the music sector is expected to be worth just 80% of its peak 2008 dollar value.
