Vodafone will be launching a ‘mass market’ smartphone this summer. The Smart II - an update from last year’s Vodafone 858 Smart - has been launched in the UK at £70 on ‘pay as you go’ before being rolled out to other European countries at under €99. It’s described as having twice the processing power of the most expensive and sought-after smartphones available three years ago.
Running a Broadcom 832MHz chip, the Vodafone Smart II offers an HVGA capacitive 3.2-inch touchscreen plus a 3.15 megapixel camera. The casing can be customised with interchangeable back plates and edges.
Patrick Chomet, Vodafone Group Terminals Director, said “The Smart II is one of the most important devices we have ever introduced. It delivers a level of performance, functionality and quality that is traditionally the preserve of high-end smartphones but at an exceptionally affordable price. We believe the Smart II could represent a tipping point in the evolution of the market, bringing a new wave of consumers to the supermobile world for the first time.”
