Vodafone, which bought navigation service Wayfinder in early 2009 and closed it down just over a year later, is now giving away the software. Wayfinder's location and navigation software can now be found on github.com and via Vodafone’s open source portal at www.betavine.net. This will make it easier for other organisations and individuals to build their own navigation-based products.
Pieter Knook, Director of Internet Services at Vodafone Group, said "Given our decision to stop developing turn by turn location based services as part of our core business, it seemed an obvious choice to make the code we own open source. We look forward to seeing its continued use in all sorts of different applications in the future."
