Vodafone UK customers targeted by hackers

Vodafone UK has confirmed that some of its customers were targeted by hackers last week.

It says its own systems were not compromised or breached in any way; instead, the criminals used email addresses and passwords acquired from a external source.

1,827 customers are believed to have had their accounts accessed, with criminals potentially gaining access to each person’s mobile phone number, bank sort code and the last four digits of their bank account. All the Vodafone accounts affected have now been blocked.

As well as launching its own investigation and contacting any customers affected, Vodafone has also informed the National Crime Agency (NCA), the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), Ofcom and the Credit Industry Fraud Avoidance Service (CIFAS).

The incident happened less than two weeks after telephone and broadband provider TalkTalk was directly targeted by hackers.
