Voicemail hacking back in the news

Today The Guardian is claiming that News Group Newspapers, which publishes the News of the World and The Sun, has paid out more than £1 million in out-of-court settlements over private investigators hacking into the mobile phone voicemail messages of public figures. In January 2007 a News of the World reporter was jailed for hacking into the mobile phones of three royal staff.

Back in August 2006 we pointed out that voicemail was – in many cases – just protected by a four-digit code if you knew the victim’s mobile number. You can listen to our report by clicking here. (It was only our 5th podcast, so we’re not quite as slick as we are today!)
