Rumours of a Sony PSP-branded mobile phone have been kicking around for a couple of years. Every few months another PlayStation news story emerges; most recently Japan’s Nikkei newspaper said Sony was setting up a project team this month to develop a combined mobile/gaming device. It seemed a bit late to us, unless the story was a ruse designed to lull other manufacturers into a false sense of security.
And now it sounds as though Sony (or Sony Ericsson) may soon have some serious competition from another big gaming brand. Microsoft’s corporate vice president Shane Kim has told gaming news website Kikizo that the Xbox brand needs to decide how it’ll enter the mobile market – which could be by creating its own handheld device, by creating its own mobile phone or by developing its “Xbox Live Anywhere” project using Windows Mobile software.
