Telecoms research company IDATE says the world market for femtocells is ready for take-off. The compound annual growth rate for femtocell sales between 2010 and 2014 is expected to be 159%. This means 23 million femtocells will be shipped worldwide in 2014, making the total market worth 931 million Euro (around £786 million).
IDATE notes that femtocells offer network operators a cost-effective means of providing additional coverage & capacity and improving customer retention while reducing CAPEX & OPEX. However, some operators are also offering other femto-based services. For example, Singapore network StarHub includes the cost of local voice calls, video calls and text messages with its Home Zone femtocell service.
