The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) has published research from real‐world driving data that shows any hand-held usage of mobile phones while driving is dangerous – or, in the words of the VTTI, leads “to a substantial increase in the risk of being involved in a safety‐critical event”. The research was conducted by analysing where drivers were looking; tasks that drew the driver’s eyes away from the road were those with the highest risk. Text messaging had the longest duration of ‘eyes off road’ time and was shown to be over 20 times worse than driving while not using a phone. Talking or listening to a mobile was just 1.3 times as risky as non-distracted driving. [Press release (pdf)]
