Android devices are the fastest-growing smartphone sector, says research

Mobile and wireless research firm iSuppli Corp says its Q2 2010 list of the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturers is dominated by companies utilising the Android operating system.

HTC's quarterly smartphone shipments were up 63.1% on the previous quarter – the highest sequential percentage growth - while Samsung Electronics followed with a 55.6% increase. Sony Ericsson was fourth, with shipments rising 15.4%, and Motorola came fifth with 12.5%. Third place was taken by Sharp, which only recently started producing Android handsets.

However, Nokia, RIM and Apple still lead in terms of overall shipments. Nokia has almost 40% of the smartphone market, with shipments up 11.6% on the previous quarter to 24 million units. RIM's BlackBerry devices have 18.5% market share and the Apple iPhone has 13.9%. iSuppli notes that Apple suffered a 4% drop in smartphone shipments in the second quarter due to the transition from the 3GS to the iPhone 4.
