Ofcom wants more availability of mobile signal boosters in the UK

New proposals from UK communications regulator Ofcom would allow customers to buy a wider range of indoor mobile repeaters to boost mobile phone signals within a small area.

The general sale of mobile repeaters was authorised by Ofcom in 2018. Two different types of repeater were legalised: static indoor repeaters, which are designed for homes and offices, and low gain in-vehicle repeaters for cars and commercial vehicles.

Some of the technical requirements set out at that time would be relaxed under Ofcom’s new proposals, offering indoor signal boosters that would work with multiple network operators rather than just a single network. Ofcom also wants to make it easier for consumers to see which unlicensed booster devices are legal to use.

The consultation on Ofcom’s proposals will run until 28th July 2021.
