The BBC is conducting a month-long survey that’s designed to measure the availability of 2G and 3G mobile phone services in the UK. It’s using an Android application that’ll collect information and will anonymise it.
The UK 3G Survey app has been developed for the BBC by Epitiro, an independent broadband analyst that also provides insight to Ofcom, the GSMA and the Organisation for Economic Cooperative Development.
A clickable coverage map is expected to be created by the BBC when the survey ends.
UPDATE: OpenSignalMaps has pointed out it's been creating an independent map of mobile phone coverage for over a year and already has 25,000 UK users. As with the BBC scheme, there's a free Android application available.
