Canonical, the company behind the open-source Ubuntu platform, has announced plans for a smartphone that transforms into a desktop PC. The Ubuntu Edge will have a 4.5-inch display and will connect to any HDMI monitor. All the specifications are subject to change but a multi-core processor and 128GB of storage are expected.
As well as running Ubuntu, the smartphone will also be equipped with the Android operating system.
The project is being launched via crowd-sourcing site Indiegogo, which means it’ll only go ahead if enough people commit to buy the phone. A total of $32 million needs to be raised in 30 days for this to happen, which would be a record for Indiegogo.
Delivery is expected in May next year.
