Mobile payment solution provider mopay has announced a global partnership with Fon, which describes itself as the world’s largest WiFi network.
Fon is enabling mopay mobile payments, making it easier for smartphone and tablet users to pay for access to a Fon hotspot. Customers will be able to get WiFi access simply by providing their mobile phone number and adding the Fon cost to their mobile account.
Fon’s WiFi community has over three million WiFi hotspots and over six million users. Fon members can share their home internet access with other Fon members; in return they get free access to other members’ WiFi when they’re out. Non-members can also use Fon hotspots but need to pay for access. Until now, the only options have involved creating an account and paying with options such as credit cards or PayPal.
Alex Puregger, COO and VP of Business Development at Fon, said “Today people want to watch videos and play games on their smart phones and tablets. WiFi offers the best user experience for that. At Fon, we give people more opportunities to connect to WiFi, and getting them connected seamlessly is key.”
The mopay partnership means that smartphone and tablet users near Fon hotspots can buy a Fon Pass simply by providing their mobile phone number at login. There’s no need to register. Customers can choose between a 25-minute pass and a one-hour pass.
