Microsoft has announced results for the final quarter of its financial year, which ended on 30th June 2012. Quarterly revenue was $18.06 billion (£11.5 billion), while revenue for the full year was $73.72 billion.

However, a decision to write off some of the value of online advertising business aQuantive, which was bought for $6.3 billion five years ago, resulted in a quarterly loss of $492 million. Overall net income for the year was £16.98 billion.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, said “We delivered record fourth quarter and annual revenue, and we’re fast approaching the most exciting launch season in Microsoft history. Over the coming year, we’ll release the next versions of Windows, Office, Windows Server, Windows Phone, and many other products and services that will drive our business forward and provide unprecedented opportunity to our customers and partners.”
