Universal Mobile Chargers on their way?

Following the EC's recent warning, the GSMA has just announced a commitment to getting the MicroUSB connector implemented as the universal charging standard for mobile phones. It’s not just them behind the idea but also 17 major manufacturers and networks. They’re aiming to have everything in place by 2012. And the environmental savings won’t just come from the estimated 51,000 tonnes of chargers produced every year – the new standard will also save up to 50% in energy consumption when in ‘standby’ mode.
