Orange rolls out HD Voice to the UK

Orange UK has launched a higher-quality HD Voice service to mobile phone users in the UK. It follows a UK trial in the south of England and the commercial launch of HD Voice in Moldova last September.

HD Voice uses the Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) speech codec, which offers a speech bandwidth of 50Hz-7000Hz. Conventional mobile calls use a much smaller bandwidth of 300Hz-3400Hz.

The service is currently only available in Orange 3G coverage areas when both callers have Orange HD mobile phones.
