UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has introduced new regulations that’ll let mobile phone operators trade the rights to the radio spectrum they hold. The move is aimed at helping to increase mobile network capacity and improve mobile services for consumers.
This decision follows a government directive in December 2010. 2G and 3G spectrum at 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz is all covered by the new regulations. Ofcom will decide whether competition is likely to be distorted before agreeing to a trade of mobile spectrum. Details of proposed trades will be published online before revised licences are issued.
