New O2 trial lets mobile customers make VoIP calls

O2 UK has announced plans to test a new service called O2 Connect. A number of consumer and business customers, along with attendees at Wired 2011, will be invited to join the trial.

O2 Connect will let customers with an iPhone or Android smartphone make UK calls and send text messages over WiFi using their regular mobile number.

Richard Porter, Head of Consumer Mobile Products for O2 in the UK, said “This trial will allow us to explore the potential of delivering VoIP services to customers. We hope to launch O2 Connect as a commercial service in 2012.”

The trial is the latest in a series of developments from O2 Labs.
