New report suggests app publishers should look to Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey and India for growth

New information from mobile app analytics platform App Annie suggests that Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey and India are the next growth markets for players in the mobile app industry to watch. It says the mobile infrastructure and rate of development in these countries is creating significant new opportunities for app publishers.

The data - from an analysis of Android and iOS apps - has been published in a new report produced in partnership with MEF, the mobile content and commerce community.

China is the largest of the growth markets, with downloads growing by 10% in the last year. This meant its overall total was the second-largest in the world, with only the USA ahead.

However, Brazil had a much higher growth rate, seeing app downloads double in the past 12 months. Downloads were also high in Indonesia (a 70% increase year-on-year), Mexico (60%), Turkey (60%) and India (30%).

Olivier Bernard, vice president of the EMEA region at App Annie, said “Emerging markets offer a huge opportunity for app publishers. However, moving into new markets is not always as simple as translating an app. As different cultures may respond differently to different monetization models or feature updates, local content and an understanding of the local app market, local competitors and local expectations is key to making the most of these rapidly growing opportunities.”

However, the report also notes that app revenue in emerging markets remains small when compared to more established markets. For example, the total number of app downloads in Germany remained stable from Q3 2013 to Q3 2014 - yet app revenue increased by 80% in the same period.

ExclusiveThe Amazon Kindle prepares to fight the Apple iPhone and Tablet

Mark Bridge writes:

Here’s a curious thing. Firstly, Amazon creates the Kindle. It starts selling the Kindle in the USA with a mobile deal that lets users download electronic books and newspapers wherever they are. Then it starts selling the Kindle to us in the UK, although – hang on a moment – it’s not talking about a UK mobile deal. Instead it still seems to be ‘roaming’ from the AT&T network. Next comes the larger-screen Kindle DX – also roaming away when it reaches our shores. And now Amazon is talking about third-party downloadable applications for the Kindle. Yes, a mobile device with downloadable apps. Hold that thought; I’ll be returning to it.

Every time a British citizen finds themselves in trouble abroad – whether the problem is pirates, police, having a drink or having a cuddle – it’s very likely someone somewhere will say “you should have checked first”.

That’s sensible advice when it comes to looking at the FCO website… but an extra reminder about checking the legality of your technology came this week when biofuel bus driver Andy Pag was arrested in India for using a satellite phone.

James Rosewell writes:

If you work for a sizeable organisation it’s 65% likely your email, contacts, calendar and task list will all reside on a Microsoft Exchange server. That’s quite a lot of mobile phones to connect and synchronise with Exchange. Microsoft has a solution called ActiveSync now supported by Nokia, Apple and a few others. RIM requires a server that IT departments need to install to allow their BlackBerry users to access these features.

Android has been left behind when it comes to accessing ActiveSync.

Last week I decided to use my own hard earned money to buy the latest high-end HTC smartphone running Android 2.1 in the form of the Google Nexus One. I’ve not used an Android-based device as my main phone for some time so was keen to understand the improvements to the operating system and see for myself how fast the Snapdragon processor really is.
