Mobile payment service Zapp has announced partnerships with a number of UK retailers ahead of an anticipated launch next year.

Asda, Sainsbury’s, House of Fraser and Shop Direct have all said they aim to allow the smartphone-based Zapp payment process from 2015.

Other companies including Best Western, Clarks, Oxfam, Spar and Thomas Cook have previously confirmed their support, along with HSBC, First Direct, Nationwide, Santander and Metro Bank.

Zapp is a subsidiary of payment provider VocaLink. It’ll enable customers to pay for goods using their existing bank account via an app on their mobile device.

Peter Keenan, Chief Executive of Zapp, said “Today is a hugely significant milestone in the history of money in the UK. At last the promise of a truly mobile and digital payment method will become a reality, meaning easier and more secure checkouts for millions. It’s amazing to have the support of such well known retailers. Together with our other partners this means millions of consumers will be able to shop at tens of thousands of merchants up and down the UK at launch.”

Hazel Allsopp of Purple WiFi writes:

Retail and hospitality businesses have long been aware of the need to offer free WiFi access to their customers. The use of smart phones is becoming increasingly widespread, and people expect to get online wherever they are, whatever they’re doing.

The latest large brand to recognise this is Intercontinental Hotels Group, who announced last month that they would be offering free access to 71 million loyalty scheme members’ worldwide. The decision was made in response to a survey in which 43% of guests said they wouldn’t stay in a hotel if it didn’t offer free WiFi.

Let’s start with a slightly belated birthday wish to the hand-held mobile phone, which made its first public appearance on 3rd April 1973. At that point we’d had carphones for a while… but this was the first time anyone had heard the phrase “Sorry, I’ve got to go, the battery’s running out” spoken in public. Or something like that.
