Samsung’s latest ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ event has revealed four new products: two phones with folding screens, a smart watch and wireless ear buds.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the third generation of the company’s book-like folding Android 5G smartphone. This version now works with the optional Samsung S Pen stylus and is water resistant. It has an outer ‘cover’ screen that offers a 6.2-inch display but unfolds to a 7.6-inch screen. Availability is due from 27th August. The 256GB version is expected to retail for £1599 SIM-free in the UK.

The Z Flip 3 looks more like previous flip-open phones although, instead of exposing a keypad, opening the phone exposes a 6.7-inch display. UK pricing is from £949 SIM-free.

There are two versions (and three sizes) of Samsung’s new smart watch: the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Both run ‘Wear OS powered by Samsung’, which combines Google’s WearOS operating system with Samsung's own Tizen OS, and include a three-in-one sensor that can monitor heart rate, heart activity and blood oxygen level. Pricing is from £249.

Also announced at the event were the Samsung Galaxy Buds2, which offer noise cancellation and an ‘ambient’ mode for hearing background sounds. These are supplied in a charging case but are designed to only work with Samsung devices. The price at launch is £139.

If I'm interviewing someone for a podcast, I'll generally use my Zoom H4N recorder and a separate microphone or two. But I don't need the same level of high-quality kit if I'm interviewing someone for a written interview. Why carry an expensive recording device when your mobile phone can do the same job?

I open the iPhone 6 box and discover a phone that feels substantial. Well engineered. Practical. Despite being just 6.9mm deep, it doesn't seem unreasonably delicate.
