We’ve previously reported on the launch of Square in the USA and iZettle in Sweden. Now eCommerce platform Powa has announced mPowa, a combination of plug-in card reader and mobile app. It means that almost anyone in the UK with a compatible smartphone will be able to take credit card and debit card payments, either when visiting customers or in their own premises.

mPowa offers personalised receipts and even allows users to create their own loyalty programs. The application will be free to download on Apple, Android and BlackBerry devices, with the plug-in reader also being offered free to customers for a limited period. Users are simply charged 0.25% per transaction, with a minimum 25p cost.

When it comes to security, mPowa meets level 1 of PCI compliance, a standard set by the Payment Card Industry.

Dan Wagner, CEO of mPowa, said “Since the financial crisis, all small business people have heard is doom and gloom. We hope to bring them some resounding good news going into 2012 with an easy to use technology that will make their businesses faster and significantly more attractive to customers.”

Mark Bridge writes:

I’ve recently been talking to Theo Neumann from Wolverhampton City Radio about the top ten gadgets that are likely to hit the headlines in 2013. The most desirable, most likely to be talked about, most exciting… that kind of thing. Although my top 10 list isn’t entirely mobile-related, I thought it was worth sharing here.

ExclusiveAre brands missing a trick with mobile?

Dave Katz writes:

It has been reported recently that consumer spend via mobile is on the increase this Christmas. Further confirmation has come from research indicating that 20% of the expected £4.6bn of total online shopping will be carried out using smartphones and tablets.

If consumers want to browse, research and purchase via mobile, then is it not something of a surprise that only 7% of adspend in the UK currently goes on mobile?
