Microsoft has launched a new project designed to improve Africa’s global competitiveness. It’s called the Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative and will see Microsoft encouraging smartphone adoption, helping businesses get online and introducing more technology skills to the workplace.

The first step is a new smartphone called the Huawei 4Afrika. This is a Windows Phone 8 device - based on the Huawei Ascend W1 - and will be launched in Angola, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa later this month. There’s a 4-inch display on the device, which is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm chip. Power-saving technology will deliver up to 420 hours of standby time or up to 560 minutes of talk time from the 1730mAh battery. A customised app store will include applications and exclusive content designed by Africans for the African market.

Fernando de Sousa, Microsoft’s general manager of the 4Afrika Initiative, said “The world has recognized the promise of Africa, and Microsoft wants to invest in that promise. We want to empower African youth, entrepreneurs, developers, and business and civic leaders to turn great ideas into a reality that can help their community, their country, the continent and beyond. The 4Afrika Initiative is built on the dual beliefs that technology can accelerate growth for Africa, and Africa can also accelerate technology for the world.”

In addition, Microsoft has started working with the Kenyan Ministry of Information and Communications and with Kenyan Internet service provider Indigo Telecom on a low-cost, high-speed, wireless broadband project called ‘Mawingu’. There’ll also be an online resource for small businesses and a free education platform called the Afrika Academy.

Mark Bridge writes:

The 2012 International CES is expected to be the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow. It runs from 10th to the 13th of January in Las Vegas next year and will contain technology from more than 2,700 companies spread over a record-breaking 1.8 million square feet of exhibition space.

Yesterday I saw a preview of what’s expected there – and all without leaving the UK. Instead I headed to a conference centre where the first-ever ‘CES Unveiled at London’ event took place.

ExclusiveEnterprise user, you are the weakest link...

Mark Bridge writes:

Any security process is only as strong as the weakest link. That’s something of a truism. And for many organisations, the weak link is most likely to occur when information leaves the office. Which means it’s often caused by the user’s mobile phone or the user themselves.

ExclusiveMcAfee's top five tips for avoiding malicious mobile apps

Mark Bridge writes:

Mobile security - as I’ve said several times in the last few months - is becoming a hot topic. Although the number of mobile viruses and malicious applications is relatively small when compared with attacks on PCs, it’s on the increase.

Last week we talked to Eddy Willems, Security Evangelist at G Data, about the security risks facing smartphone users... and in the last 12 months we’ve also spoken to David Emm of Kaspersky Lab UK and Craig Heath from Franklin Heath about similar subjects.

ExclusiveLast week at The Fonecast: 14th November 2011

Mark Bridge writes:

Flash is dead, HTML5 is the future. Okay, the next stage in the evolution of the mobile browser isn’t that clear – but a restructure at Adobe has pretty much marked the end of mobile Flash development.

ExclusiveMobile malware: 'criminals are experimenting at the moment'

Mark Bridge writes:

This week’s podcast feature takes a fresh look at security on mobile phones. I’ve been talking to Eddy Willems, Security Evangelist at G Data, about the challenges and solutions facing smartphone users. Both Eddy and his current employer have been active in digital security for a couple of decades, so there’s plenty of experience under their respective belts.
