A new mobile service called Mobile by Sainsbury’s is being launched this summer by Vodafone and Sainsbury’s in the UK.

It’ll run as a 50/50 joint venture with a management team of experienced mobile, retail and marketing experts from both Sainsbury's and Vodafone. Full details haven’t yet been released, although Mobile by Sainsbury’s is expected to be a virtual network offering mobile phones on a range of tariffs.

Customers will receive Nectar points as a loyalty incentive.

Luke Jensen, Sainsbury’s Group Development director, said “Our customers trust us to provide top quality products and service at fair prices, and Mobile by Sainsbury’s feels like a natural extension of our brand as well as a great way to reward our customers. We’re extremely pleased to be working with Vodafone and look forward to developing a range of mobile products and services that will take the stress out of purchasing decisions in a familiar environment, offering what’s right for them whatever their needs may be.”

The service will operate in competition with Tesco Mobile, which is a joint venture between rival supermarket Tesco and O2 UK.

Sainsbury’s has previously offered a Sainsbury’s Mobile service in partnership with The Carphone Warehouse and O2. Earlier this year it launched a trial of in-store phone shops at its King’s Lynn and Letchworth superstores.
