Carphone Warehouse Group plc and Dixons Retail plc (which owns the Currys and PC World retail businesses) have agreed to merge the two companies into a new business called Dixons Carphone plc. Shareholders of each company will own 50% each of the new business.

The directors expect savings from the combined company to reach almost £40 million in the 2015/2016 financial year and at least £80 million by the 2017/2018 financial year.

When the deal is completed, Carphone Warehouse chairman and co-founder Sir Charles Dunstone will become the Chairman of Dixons Carphone.

There’ll be two Deputy Chairmen - Roger Taylor, current Deputy Chairman of Carphone, and John Allan, Chairman of Dixons. The new CEO will be Sebastian James, who’s currently Dixons CEO, while Andrew Harrison, CEO of Carphone Warehouse, will become Deputy CEO.

Sebastian James of Dixons said “The ability to take what we have built in electrical retailing and add the profound expertise of Carphone Warehouse in connectivity would make us a leading force in retailing for a connected world. Together, we can create a seamless experience for our customers that will enable technology to deliver what it promises – that is, to make their lives better.”

Subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, the merger is expected to be completed this autumn.

ExclusiveThe Amazon Android tablet and the Apple iPhone 5

Mark Bridge writes:

I’m not a big fan of reporting on rumours - I’d rather wait until the real thing happens - but I thought these two stories were too big and too well-defined to ignore completely.

Firstly, it looks as though Amazon will be announcing an Android-powered tablet tomorrow. Called the Kindle Fire, it probably won’t be a direct replacement for the Kindle e-book reader but an alternative. Most commentators suggest we should expect a 7-inch colour screen, a focus on cloud-based services and a pretty heavily customised version of Android.

Welcome to a summary of last week’s mobile industry news from TheFonecast.com.

The biggest mobile-flavoured story from the past seven days was probably HP’s replacement of its president and CEO. Léo Apotheker is out after less than a year, replaced by former eBay CEO Meg Whitman. It’s not likely to affect the company’s plans for webOS tablets and phones… but it’ll be interesting to see what Ms Whitman does next.

ExclusiveNot all mystery shopping is a complete mystery

Mark Bridge writes:

If you’ve worked in retail, you’re probably aware of the ‘mystery shopper’. This is someone who appears to be a regular consumer but is actually reviewing your performance. Perhaps they’re working for your employer, maybe they’re conducting an independent survey, they may even be reporting for a magazine or newspaper. But they’re about as welcome as a knock on the front door when you’re at home in the shower.

ExclusiveOnly 17 per cent of advertisers have a mobile-optimised site

Google UK head of mobile advertising, Simon Morgan, considers the most significant developments in the field of m-commerce and crunches the mobile numbers.

Over the past year we've seen smartphones overtake PC sales for the first time. The number of people on the mobile web globally has doubled, reaching one billion and in the UK there are now 20 million mobile internet users. If we think of search as being a barometer of consumer interest, in just 12 months there has been a huge shift.
