ExclusiveVopium puts a friendly face on mobile VoIP

Mark Bridge writes:

Voice over IP – the ability to make phone calls over the internet - is a topic we covered in our first-ever podcast five years ago. At times it promised to change the way we used mobile phones... so what's been happening?

I've been talking to Tanveer Sharif, CEO and co-founder of international call service Vopium, to learn more.

ExclusiveUK riots hit the mobile industry

Mark Bridge writes:

Having just returned from a week's holiday in a part of the country where mobile coverage was surprisingly sparse, it struck me how much mobile phones were linked to the recent English riots and looting.

ExclusiveGoogle claims 'hostile campaign' against Android by Microsoft and Apple

Mark Bridge writes:

David Drummond, Google's Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, has just written a blog post that describes an 'anti-competitive strategy' against Android by companies including Apple, Microsoft and Oracle. Entitled "When patents attack Android", it points out that more than 550,000 Android devices are now activated every day... and says this has resulted in "a hostile, organized campaign against Android".

ExclusiveSteve Ballmer and Rupert Murdoch - both troubled by their one-percent businesses

Mark Bridge writes:

Last month, News Corporation's Rupert Murdoch said the News of the World had accounted for just 1% of his global business. It's a figure that put the overall size of News Corp into perspective.

This week, some analysis of Microsoft's financial results seems to suggest Windows Phone is only generating a similarly small percentage for its parent.

UK service providers must notify customers when they connect to a different network

New rules from UK telecoms regulator Ofcom will protect customers when they use their mobile phone on a foreign network.

When the UK left the European Union, networks were no longer required to apply EU rules that let customers 'roam like at home' without paying extra. There was also no legal requirement to warn customers about 'roaming' charges when they connected to a network abroad, although many networks still chose to do so.

New Ofcom rules from October 2024 now mean mobile network providers must notify customers when they start roaming. The network providers must also provide clear information to help customers decide whether or how to use their mobile phone abroad.

Information about roaming charges will include:

  • any fair use limits or time limits that apply;
  • setting a spend cap to limit their spend; and
  • where to find additional information about roaming.

In addition, customers will be alerted if they are inadvertently roaming, perhaps because they're near an international border. As part of this, networks must enable customers to reduce or limit their spending on roaming while in the UK.
