Mobile network operators are facing a seven-fold increase in the cost of delivering data across their networks, according to Juniper Research. As a result, it says these mobile networks need to deal with the costs of data delivery and the inefficiencies in base station operations if they are to remain economically viable.
According to the Juniper Research report, data delivery costs for mobile networks could surpass $370 billion (£227 billion) annually by 2016, a 7-fold increase on last year’s level of $53 billion.
However, these future costs could be reduced by the deployment of data offload solutions, such as WiFi networks and femtocells, as well as by controlling the flow of mobile data.
Dr Windsor Holden, who wrote the report, said “The case for reducing network inefficiency is both environmental and economic. By implementing solutions designed to reduce energy wastage, not only will MNOs markedly cut their operating costs but they will following sustainable business practices which reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
