Last month Telefónica Digital set up a new Telefónica Dynamic Insights business unit and said its first product would be called ‘Smart Steps’. It’s now announced the launch of ‘Smart Steps’ in the UK.

Smart Steps is a joint initiative with market research company GfK. It uses anonymised information from mobile phone users to help organisations measure and understand the number of people visiting an area. As a result, businesses and other organisations will be able to track footfall by time, gender and age.

For example, retailers could plan the location of future shops, customise promotional offers and measure the impact of marketing activity, while local councils could check the effect of car parking charges or late-night shopping.

Steve Alder, Chief Executive Officer at Telefónica Dynamic Insights, said “Smart Steps generates far richer insights than existing footfall measurement products. It shows not only the size of a crowd visiting an area but also anonymised trends on the age and gender composition of the crowd. The information is drawn from a larger sample and is updated far more regularly than traditional tools. It will help a range of organisations - including retailers, town councils, sporting arenas and emergency responders - to make better informed decisions and better understand and serve the needs of their customers.”

Telefonica Dynamic Insights points out that it does not sell personal information and does not track individuals.

ExclusiveTwo reasons Microsoft will buy Nokia

James Rosewell writes:

Microsoft have been talking about Mango, the upcoming upgrade to Windows Phone 7 incorporating their battery-friendly flavour of multi-tasking and 499 other new features. They've also welcomed Fujitsu, Acer and ZTE to the Windows Phone fold. However there was no significant news from Nokia and Microsoft. No timeframe for handsets, nothing in fact. Both companies are being tight lipped about the partnership at the moment.

Mark Bridge writes:

With all the excitement about the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, it's easy to forget another partnership between a major online brand and the Finnish mobile giant.

Exactly a year ago, Yahoo! and Nokia announced a worldwide strategic alliance that would see Nokia providing Yahoo!'s maps and navigation services under the Ovi brand, while Yahoo! would power Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services. The two companies would also work on sharing log-in details across Yahoo! and Ovi services.

ExclusiveIt's not a mobile wallet. It's just a phone.

Mark Bridge writes:

Don't get me wrong. I'm excited about the idea of mobile payments. But I think the Quick Tap launch and all this talk of a 'mobile wallet' is a little overhyped. And here are the three main reasons why.

ExclusiveHow I built my own mobile wallet

Mark Bridge writes:

Orange Quick Tap is official. You can buy a Samsung Tocco Lite-a-like, add the details of a participating card provider and Bob's your uncle.

Except I've already got a phone. And a credit card that's not from Barclays. So what can I do?
