Mozilla has announced a new dual-core Firefox OS reference phone for mobile developers. The Firefox OS Flame smartphone, which has a 4.5-inch screen and a 5 megapixel camera, is designed to help developers create and test new applications.

It runs a Qualcomm 1.2GHz processor, dual-SIM support and has a RAM capacity that can be adjusted between 1GB and 256MB, helping developers see how apps would perform on lower-spec phones.

In addition, Alcatel and ZTE have revealed new Firefox OS devices, including the ZTE Open C, ZTE Open II, Alcatel OneTouch Fire C, Fire E and the 4G-enabled Fire S smartphones plus the Alcatel OneTouch Fire 7 tablet.

As well as the new handsets, Mozilla says the Firefox OS is now supported by the PhoneGap app development framework, which means PhoneGap developers can now port existing apps to Firefox OS in a few hours.
