The Mobile by Sainsbury’s service, which was set up earlier this month as a joint venture with Vodafone UK, has announced its pricing.

As well as offering a basic ‘pay as you go’ mobile phone service with standard calls at 8p per minute and text messages costing 4p each, there are also three 30-day allowances. Pricing starts with a £10 bundle including 200 minutes of calls, ‘unlimited’ texts and 250MB of data - rising to a £20 bundle with 800 minutes of calls and 1GB of data.

Customers will also receive double Nectar loyalty card points when they top-up their mobile phone and also when they buy other Sainsbury’s shopping. The company reckons a family of four could collect Nectar points worth up to £180 in a year.

Emma McLaughlin, Mobile by Sainsbury’s Marketing Director, said “The average UK family is feeling the pinch, and this is an easy way to make your pound stretch further. Sainsbury’s has demonstrated that a family of four can eat five meals for just £20, so the £180 worth of Nectar points would feed a family across 45 meals a year. Or you could use the points to treat yourself and your partner to a relaxing spa day.”

All Sainsbury’s stores will sell SIM cards for the service, with more than 250 stores also stocking a range of feature phones and smartphones.

ExclusivePredictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
