UK virtual mobile network Ovivo Mobile has closed, affecting what’s thought to be tens of thousands of customers.

The network has posted a message on its website that says “We are very sad to announce that for reasons beyond our control, OVIVO Mobile is closing down on the evening of Wednesday 19th March 2014. We'd like to thank each and every one of you for your support and friendship over the last two years.”

Facebook and Twitter accounts for the company have also been disabled.

Customers can transfer their mobile phone numbers to another network by applying for a PAC code online.

Although Ovivo Mobile offered a basic tariff that was funded by advertising, customers could also buy credit on a ‘pay as you go’ basis for a larger monthly allowance of calls, text messages or mobile data.

Its service worked on the Vodafone UK network via mobile virtual network aggregator Cognatel.

We spoke to Ovivo Mobile’s CEO and founder Dariush Zand in a podcast on May 2012. You can listen to the interview via the built-in audio player on our website or by downloading the MP3 file.

The HotUKDeals community is offering some advice to Ovivo customers at http://www.hotukdeals.com/misc/ovivo-closing-down-1857063?page=3#post21273932. Tips include saving contacts to your phone (not your SIM), requesting a PAC code if you want to transfer your Ovivo number to another network, cancelling any Direct Debits and claiming back recent payments made via PayPal or debit/credit card.

Trade newspaper Mobile News is reporting that Ovivo Mobile was terminated by Cognatel, its mobile virtual network aggregator, following an alleged dispute over network software. The publication understands that Cognatel had failed to provide software that was essential to Ovivo’s business, which led to Ovivo Mobile withholding some payments. http://www.mobilenewscwp.co.uk/2014/03/20/exclusive-dispute-with-cognatel-led-to-ovivo-mobile-closure/

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.
