And our survey said...

Mark Bridge writes:

The coolest person in the country admires the French president's wife and lives in East London. Oh, and they use a BlackBerry by day but an iPhone by night.

That's what recent surveys say. Nonsense, isn’t it?

I couldn’t resist writing a follow-up to yesterday’s complaint about our obsession with the minutiae of mobile phones. I know it’s a bit rich coming from someone in the marketing business on a website that’s dedicated to mobile industry news, but bear with me for a moment.

Last week, mobile phone comparison website rightmobilephone.co.uk published the results of a survey.

76% of people said the Apple iPhone was the coolest looking phone... and 57% of people said the BlackBerry was the most professional looking phone, although they didn't seem to mention a specific model. LG phones are 'girly', the Apple iPhone is 'manly' and the Nokia 3210 (a specific model at last – hurrah!) is retro.

Words fail me. Well, no, they don’t. Polite words fail me.

It’s just a bit of self-promoting fun for rightmobilephone.co.uk – and perhaps I should sit down with a cup of tea and relax a bit – but I don’t see many other industry segments doing this as regularly as the mobile business. Does Komatsu make the coolest bulldozer? Can we find a thousand people to tell us who makes the most professional-looking office chair?

Yes, I know that press releases are all about publicity. Online security companies release the results of surveys that tell us people want more online security. The makers of backup solutions reveal that most consumers don’t have an adequate backup solution. It’s just… oh, I dunno… could some of you try a bit harder, please?
