HTC has announced the latest update to its flagship smartphone. This new handset is the HTC One M9, which follows in the footsteps of last year’s HTC One M8 and the original 2013 HTC One.

One of the most notable changes is the device’s rear-facing camera, which now captures 20 megapixel images as well as 4K videos and is protected by a sapphire lens. The ‘UltraPixel’ designation has moved to the front-facing camera, which promises pixels that capture 300% more light than standard cameras.

HTC’s One M9 will run Android v5.0 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon octa-core (quad 2.0GHz + quad 1.5GHz) processor. Like the previous model, it has a 5-inch full HD screen.

Cher Wang, who chairs HTC, said “HTC has built its reputation on challenging expectations in the mobile industry. The HTC One M9 accomplishes this once again with stunning elegance and design, combined with smart features that help bring your world to life, connecting you in a deeper way to the things you consider most important. So much more than just a phone, the HTC One M9 is an extension of who you are.”

Availability of the HTC One M9 is due from mid-March.

In addition, HTC revealed a new wearable fitness tracker. The HTC Grip is a waterproof band produced in partnership with sports clothing company Under Armour. It has a curved monochrome display, links with the UA Record service, and is due to go on sale in North America within the next few weeks.

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

ExclusiveKapture review: the audio-recording wristband

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

ExclusiveDesigning mobile phones for seniors: we talk to Doro and Emporia Telecom

Producing mobile phones for older customers requires much more than big buttons and a simple interface. At Mobile World Congress last month we spoke to two major players in this growing sector: Swedish company Doro and Austria's Emporia Telecom.

Our first conversation was with Harald Obereder, Chief Technology Officer at Emporia, who spoke to Mark Bridge about handset design and user interface design. This was followed by an interview with Chris Millington, Managing Director for Doro UK and Ireland, about research and development in the 'senior tech' market.
