Apple announces iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple 'iWatch' Watch

Apple has announced two new handsets today: the iPhone 6, which has a 4.7-inch display, and the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch display.

Both phones have an aluminium body, Apple’s new 64-bit A8 chip, an improved 8 megapixel camera and the new Apple Pay service, which combines NFC technology with payment information from Apple’s iTunes store. Customers in the USA will be able to use the new phones to make payments in retail stores from October, although UK availability of Apple Pay hasn’t been confirmed.

The new new devices will run iOS 8, which was announced earlier this year.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said “iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the biggest advancements in iPhone history. The iPhone is the most loved smartphone in the world with the highest customer satisfaction in the industry and we are making it much better in every way. Only Apple can combine the best hardware, software and services at this unprecedented level and we think customers are going to love it.”

Availability in the USA and the UK is due from Friday 19th September.

As well as the two new phones, Apple showed off the Apple Watch, which many had expected to be called the iWatch. It’s due to go on sale early next year and is compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models.

Features include answering calls, sending and receiving messages, communication with compatible apps and a link with Apple Pay. As well as offering voice control, the Apple Watch interface can be navigated by using the ‘Digital Crown’ on the side of the device. Pricing is from $349 (around £220).

We've missed the big news. What about Bono and U2? In a world where artists don't make money from albums and downloads, but from concerts they get a wheelbarrow of money from Apple as a one off payment and re-engaged with their past fans and made a load of new ones. Expect the price of U2 concert tickets to be even more expensive next time they tour!

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
