Eurotunnel has signed a 10-year agreement with EE and Vodafone that’ll make mobile phone services available to Eurostar and Le Shuttle passengers travelling from the UK to France.
A similar deal came into operation last year with French networks providing mobile coverage in the ‘South Tunnel’ that carries travellers from France to the UK.
Initially there’ll be 2G and 3G connectivity in the ‘North Tunnel’ from March 2014, with 4G data expected from the summer. Eurostar is also working to provide WiFi coverage on its trains.
Around 20 million passengers use the Channel Tunnel - the world’s longest undersea tunnel - every year. Approximately 35 minutes of each journey is spent travelling 100 metres below the sea.
