Qualcomm leads smartphone processor sales

Revenue generated by the global smartphone applications processor market grew by 65% year-on-year in Q2 2011, according to a Strategy Analytics report. In total, the smartphone chip market generated $1.7 billion (£1.1 billion) during the quarter.

Qualcomm products accounted for more than 51% of the Q2 2011 revenue share in the smartphone applications processor market, followed by Samsung and then Texas Instruments.

Stuart Robinson, Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, said “Qualcomm gained 50% revenue share in Q2 2011 on the strength of its dominant market position in the Android ecosystem and Snapdragon processor momentum. Strategy Analytics estimates that Qualcomm applications processors powered over 60% of the Android smartphones shipped in Q2 2011. In contrast, Qualcomm competitors Broadcom and ST-Ericsson so far failed to capitalize on smartphone growth in order to build a strong position in the applications processor market, despite their similar integrated approach.”

Strategy Analytics calculated that dual-core processors accounted for 14% of total smartphone applications processors shipped in Q2 2011.
