New BlackBerry PlayBook will be able to run Android applications

Research In Motion says its new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, which launches in the US and Canada next month (and is expected in the UK this summer), will also be able to run Android applications and BlackBerry Java apps.

Two optional ‘app players’ will be offered by RIM in a few months, enabling users to download and run BlackBerry Java apps and Android v2.3 apps from BlackBerry App World.

Developers will simply need to ‘repackage’ existing Android applications for BlackBerry App World.

Mike Lazaridis, President and co-CEO at Research In Motion, said “The BlackBerry PlayBook is an amazing tablet. The power that we have embedded creates one of the most compelling app experiences available in a mobile computing device today. The upcoming addition of BlackBerry Java and Android apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook on BlackBerry App World will provide our users with an even greater choice of apps and will also showcase the versatility of the platform.”

RIM’s annual results were also released today. A record 52.3 million BlackBerry smartphones were shipped, a 43% increase on the previous financial year.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
